Correspondence Continuing Education for Nuclear Pharmacists and Nuclear Medicine Professionals

VOLUME V LEARNING OBJECTIVES*

Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

1. describe parent-daughter radioisotope separation techniques used in the development and operation of radioisotope generator systems.

2. explain how parent radioisotopes (for use in generator systems) are produced.

3. discuss the operation of the most clinically-useful radioisotope generator systems.

4. list the characteristics of a good radioisotope generator system.

5. discuss the type and frequency of adverse reactions associated with the clinical use of radiopharmaceuticals.

6. critically investigate the cause-effect relationship between an observed adverse reaction and the administration of a radiopharmaceutical.

7. state the definition of "an adverse reaction to a radiopharmaceutical."

8. report the occurrence of an adverse reaction using forms available from the United States Pharmacopeia and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.

9. discuss the application in nuclear pharmacy practice and the radiopharmaceutical industry for pyrogen and sterility testing.

10. list the equipment and materials required to perform limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) and sterility testing.

11. outline the steps necessary to perform LAL and sterility testing.

12. explain how to interpret the results of LAL and sterility testing.

13. discuss the general chemistry as applied to different radiopharmaceuticals prepared by reduction methods.

14. explain how specific stated of Tc-99m-radiopharmaceuticals are prepared and their usefulness in nuclear medicine.

15. identify oxidation states of Tc-99m.

16. draw the molecular structure of various Tc-99m complexes.

17. review a patient chart and/or interview an outpatient, and from the information obtained develop a patient problem list as it relates to the scheduled diagnostic imaging procedure.

18. after reviewing the patient's current OTC and prescription medications (or medication administration record), consult pertinent literature and determine if the patient's drug therapy has the potential to interfere with the outcome of the scheduled imaging procedure.

19. write a pharmaceutical care consult (in SOAP format) to the patient's primary care physician (or, if appropriate, the radiologist/nuclear medicine physician) concerning a potential medication-related problem.

20. prepare a Pharmacist's Care Claim Form for reimbursement of a pharmaceutical care consultant.

21. review the methods for clinical assessment of renal function.

22. describe the criteria of an ideal agent for quantitative measurement of GFR and ERPF.

23. describe the advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques available for measurement of GFR and ERPF.

24. review the clinical and research applications of nuclear quantitative renal procedures.

* Only four learning objectives are herein provided for each lesson in the program. Additional objectives are available upon request.

Questions and Answers about this Program

How does this program work? Over a period of eight months (May 1996 through December 1996) you will receive a total of 6 lessons. Lessons will be sent at approximately one month intervals. Upon receipt of each lesson, read or review the program, complete the 25 question examination and return the examination answer sheet in the envelope provided. Upon successful completion (70% or better) of the six lessons, a certificate listing appropriate CEU's will be mailed to you. Partial (prorated) credit can be awarded at the rate of 2.5 contact hours or 0.25 CEU's for each lesson completed successfully. If you require a certificate before you complete all six lessons (i.e., for relicensure) please notify the CE office at (505) 277-3125.

Is the program accredited elsewhere? The program is accredited in all states which have accepted the ACPE list of approved providers. (The State of Florida will also be considering this program for nuclear pharmacy CE credit. The Florida Board of Pharmacy has previously approved Volumes I - IV for CE credit.)

Will this program satisfy the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) continuing education requirement for recertification? A proposal is presently being considered by BPS and a response is expected in July 1996.

What if I do not pass the test? A new answer sheet will be sent to you and you will be asked to retake the examination. Remember, it is an open book exam. Rereading the lessons is encouraged.
